Vicky Lindo and William Brookes Ceramics

Vicky Lindo and Bill Brookes draw on a number of inspirations for their slip cast ceramics. The duo work out of their studio in Bideford, Devon to create large-scale works of art that have been acquired by large-scale art institutions such as the V&A in London, as well as important art collections around the world.

Vicky, who studied for a BA in Textiles, discovered a love of slip casting after she started working at the Bideford Museum. She designs the original objects in clay before Bill creates the mould and the centrifugal apparatus needed to make each object. Once fired and glazed for the first time, Vicky creates a design on the surface using the ancient technique of sgraffito, before it is overglazed and fired again.

The couple’s work draws on subjects as diverse as classical mythology, history, the natural world, and even politics, as well as their own day-to-day lives.

In 2019 Vicky and BIll won the BCB Award for Dead Dad Book, nine large-form vessels which told the moving story of Vicky’s father, who came to Britain as part of the Windrush Generation, and her relationship with him. This body of work is now part of the permanent collection at the V&A in London.
