How ducks invented apple bobbing.

Ducks, when they seek food, flip upside down with their heads deep in the water.

In Roman times, people would participate in apple bobbing, a game where people try to catch floating apples in their mouths without using their hands. The first to get an apple would be the first to marry.

This activity is great because, by doing the apple bobbing, water would splash out of the bucket, and worms would dig to the surface, thinking it was raining. Worms, like ducks, surface when they feel impact. During the wedding of the apple bobbing winner, guests would dance, causing the worms to rise, and ducks would be there, ready to feast.

In the painting, you see a couple dancing in a puddle at the bottom left. Under the puddle is a pink worm that has come to the surface.

Above them an apple tree.
