Aoibhin Maguire’s paintings are rooted in the observations she made during her travels and her ongoing interest in nature, memory, and colour. Working primarily in vibrant palettes and layered compositions, she creates immersive spaces that sit between real and imagined environments. While her paintings often begin with specific locations, experiences, or observations, they develop into broader explorations of atmosphere, emotion, and perception.
Travel plays a central role in Maguire’s practice. She regularly documents places through drawing and photography, collecting visual references that later inform her studio work. Many of her works originate from drawings where she records plants, landscapes, and changing light conditions. In the studio, she reworks these references through collage, drawing, and compositional studies. By cropping photographs, combining viewpoints, and selectively editing details, Maguire constructs scenes that reference real places while moving beyond direct representation.
Aoibhin Maguire is a painter from Belfast, Northern Ireland, currently based in London. She holds a BA in Fine Art from Lancaster University and an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art.
