The Seraphim and the Cloud Boat by Evelyn Albrow

This piece is based upon ideas surrounding the classical element of air, focusing on its symbolism for change and movement.

The surface is covered with different flying beings and hybrids, from insects to angel’s spanning history, all journeying together in search of a new world. The flying boat is heavily inspired by Bosch’s ‘Ship of Fools’ (c.1490-50) who were deemed at the time to be rudderless. This idea is echoed in Erasmus’s ‘Praise of Folly’, where ‘The foolish change like the moon’. The creatures flying under this moon are seeking change, but for all the right reasons.
